Clampdown on HMOs

Stop HMOs.jpg

Park ward campaigner Zach Kellerman teams up with Lib Dem leader Cllr Nicola Aisthorpe to stop family homes being turned into problematic houses of multiple occupation (HMOs). To address the surge of family homes being turned into inadequate ‘Houses in Multiple Occupation’ (HMOs) in the Park ward, Liberal Democrat Health Spokesman Zach Kellerman, is calling for stricter regulations. Currently under Conservative control, planning permission is not required for developers to convert a family home into an HMO for up to eight unrelated tenants sharing a bathroom and kitchen facility. The Liberal Democrats are campaigning for the implementation of an 'Article 4 Direction,' - a measure that will ensure all developers require planning permission, so that HMOs are regulated and put in the correct locaitons that do not cause overcrowding or parking issues. Lib Dem campaigner, Zach Kellerman, expressed concern about the lack of forward planning under the Conservative-led council. Zach said: "As usual, our area has been left behind. Without stricter planning regulations, we are seeing a rise in substantial HMO properties across the area that can lead to a number of problems in the community including anti social behaviour and noise nusiance.” Councillor Nicola Aisthorpe, the Local Liberal Democrat group leader (pictured, with Zach), underscored the importance of affordable housing but insisted that it should not compromise residents' quality of life. Nicola said, “Without adequate licensing measures, the Conservatives are failing local people, causing an increase in poor living conditions and the erosion of community harmony across the borough”. In a call to action, the Liberal Democrats are urging residents of Park Ward to sign the below petition demanding the Council to implement the 'Article 4 Direction.'

By signing this petition, I call on North East Lincs Council to implement an Article 4 direction to require planning permission before a home can be converted into a HMO.
