The Labour government’s push to reorganise and abolish councils is an attack on local democracy, and North East Lincolnshire stands to lose the most! Sign this petition today to protect North East Lincolnshire’s identity, representation, and future. Say no to mega-councils and yes to local democracy! It is disappointing that Labour’s plan to abolish councils has received backing from the Conservatives, who have written to Labour ministers supporting the merger of ten councils into two mega-councils across Lincolnshire. This proposal represents a serious threat to the representation and needs of North East Lincolnshire’s residents and communities. It undermines local decision-making by imposing a top-down structure that our community may neither want nor need. Even more concerning, these plans are currently being discussed without consultation with the public or elected representatives from other parties. This proposal risks leaving North East Lincolnshire’s residents being sidelined and ignored. The way this situation has been handled so far only reinforces that concern. A mega-council that combines North East Lincolnshire with North Lincolnshire, East Lindsey, and West Lindsey as currently proposed would: - Destroy local identity: Each of these areas has distinct needs and histories, which would be overshadowed in a larger, centralised council. - Weaken representation: Councillors would be stretched too thin across massive wards, making it harder for residents to connect with their representatives and have local voices heard. - Offer unproven benefits: Claims of cost savings and efficiency are unsupported by evidence, leaving us with vague promises but no real facts or data. North East Lincolnshire has suffered from such experiments before, notably during the Humberside County Council era, where our area was consistently overlooked and underfunded. We cannot allow history to repeat itself. Our area has already endured significant upheaval with repeated reorganisations, from the creation and abolition of Humberside to the establishment of North East Lincolnshire and constant boundary changes. It is time to put a stop to these disruptive, top-down plans. The Liberal Democrats stand with the residents of North East Lincolnshire in opposing this reorganisation. We believe decisions about our future should be made by local people who understand our community best. Sign this petition today and make your voice heard. Together, we can send a powerful message to those in power: North East Lincolnshire deserves better.
